Sometimes when you open League of Legends and try to start a game, nothing happens when you click the Play button. This is a frustrating bug that stops you from creating a lobby and playing with friends or starting ranked games. There are two simple fixes that I have tried that work for fixing this lobby issue. This guide explains why this error happens and how to fix it quickly.
Why the Can’t Make Lobby Error Happens in LoL
The “can’t make lobby” bug happens when League of Legends gets stuck and can’t properly load the game mode selection screen. When you press the Play button at the top of the client, the menu where you choose game modes (ranked, normal, ARAM) should pop up. But with this bug, nothing happens – the button doesn’t work at all. This usually happens because:
- League didn’t close properly the last time you exited
- Some League files are still running in the background
- The client got confused and needs to be reset
The bug is random and can happen to anyone. Sometimes it fixes itself after restarting, but other times you need to manually fix it using the methods below. Before trying the fixes, make sure you actually have this bug:
- Step 1: Open League of Legends and log in normally.
- Step 2: Look at the top of the client where it says “Play” and click it.
- Step 3: If a menu pops up showing game modes like Ranked Solo/Duo, Ranked Flex, Normal Draft, and ARAM, you don’t have the bug. Everything is working fine.
- Step 4: If nothing happens when you click Play, or the button doesn’t work at all, you have the bug and need to use one of the fixes below.
How to Fix Can’t Make Lobby Error for League of Legends
There are two methods to fix this bug. Try Method 1 first since it’s faster and easier. If that doesn’t work, use Method 2.
Method 1: Use TFT to Create a Lobby
This is the quickest fix and works for many players.
- Step 1: Instead of clicking the Play button, click on the TFT (Teamfight Tactics) button on the left side of the client.
- Step 2: Wait for the TFT screen to load. This should only take a few seconds.
- Step 3: Once you’re in the TFT section, look at the bottom of the screen and click the button that says “Play” or “Find Match.”
- Step 4: This will create a TFT lobby. Now that you have a lobby open, look for the option to change game mode. It is the “arrow” option on the top left corner. You can even refer to the image below that I have added.
- Step 5: Click on the game mode selector and switch from TFT to whatever you actually want to play – Ranked Solo/Duo, Ranked Flex, Normal Draft, or ARAM.
- Step 6: Your lobby should now work normally and you can invite friends or start matchmaking.
This method tricks the client into creating a lobby through TFT, then lets you switch to regular League modes. It works because TFT uses a different system to create lobbies.

Method 2: Close League Completely and Restart
If Method 1 doesn’t work, you need to fully close League of Legends and restart it. This is a bit more complicated but almost always works.
- Step 1: Close League of Legends by clicking the X button like normal.
- Step 2: Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete on your keyboard at the same time. This opens Task Manager.
- Alternative: If that doesn’t work, right-click on your taskbar at the bottom of your screen and click “Task Manager.”
- Step 3: In Task Manager, click on the Details tab at the top.
- Step 4: Look through the list for anything that says “League of Legends” or has “League” in the name. You might see multiple entries.
- Step 5: Click on each League of Legends entry one at a time, then click the End Task button at the bottom right.
- Step 6: Do this for ALL League of Legends entries. Make sure none are left running.
- Step 7: Now look for anything that says “Riot Games” in the Details tab.
- Step 8: If you see any Riot Games entries, click on them and press End Task as well.
- Step 9: Once you’ve ended all League of Legends and Riot Games processes, close Task Manager.
- Step 10: Wait 10 seconds, then open League of Legends again like you normally would.
- Step 11: Try clicking the Play button to create a lobby.
Important: Sometimes you need to repeat this process multiple times. If it doesn’t work the first time, close League through Task Manager again and try opening it again. Some players have to do this 5-10 times before it works, but it eventually does work.
Why You Might Need to Repeat Method 2
The reason you sometimes need to close and restart multiple times is that League files can be stubborn. Even after ending tasks in Task Manager, some background processes might start again automatically. By repeating the process several times, you force League to fully reset and fix whatever was causing the bug.
Don’t give up if it doesn’t work after the first try. Keep closing all League and Riot processes through Task Manager and restarting until the Play button works.
